Duke University Medical Center is an academic health institution whose core missions are to provide a comprehensive education to students and trainees, perform biomedical research and deliver health care services to the general public. The center was established in 1925 via a $4 million endowment from Duke University s namesake, tobacco and textile tycoon James Buchanan Duke. Since its founding, Duke University Medical Center has been dedicated to improving health care in the Carolinas. Its areas of expertise include biochemistry, immunology, neurobiology, pathology, pharmacology, anesthesiology, obstetrics and gynecology, pediatrics, psychiatry, radiology and surgery. The center is located in Durham, N.C.
