The Chapel Hill Transit department provides a range of public transportation services for the residents and visitors of the Town of Chapel Hill and the communities of The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in North Carolina. It operates administrative, operations, maintenance and nondepartmental divisions. The department offers fixed route and demand responsive services within an area of approximately 25 square miles. Established in 1974, the Chapel Hill Transit department also provides the EZ Rider service for mobility-challenged people. It operates the Tar Heel Express, a park and ride shuttle service for special events. The department oversees taxi franchise approvals and renewals. With a budget of more than $10 million, the Chapel Hill Transit department is responsible for statistics reporting and compliance with state and federal regulations.
