History
Planning began in 2000, with the Junior League of Winston-Salem expanding upon JLWS reading programs to provide a distinct literary experience. Incorporated in 2004, Bookmarks presented the first festival in Old Salem. 2005 saw change and a new location, Historic Bethabara Park. In 2006, Bookmarks attained 501c3 status, and spun off as an independent organization. The 2007 and 2008 festivals followed the established format, each drawing 6000 attendees. From 2009 - 2013, Bookmarks hosted the festival in the Downtown Arts District, increasing visibility and accessibility. In 2010, a director was hired and year-round offerings expanded which included Authors in Schools and Author Talks presenting nationally renowned authors. From 2014 - 2017, we held our Festival at the Milton Rhodes Center for the Arts and the surrounding area. On July 7, 2017, Bookmarks opened an independent nonprofit bookstore and gathering space at 634 W. Fourth Street #11, which double outreach to 50,000 annually
