Saint Augustine's Church Director of Music Ministry
With its roots going back to St. Augustine Mission Church formed in 1901, the unparalleled growth of New City in the 1950s led the Archdiocese of New York to create St. Augustine Parish in 1957. In 1961, an elementary school, staffed by Dominican Sisters of Sparkill, was opened by the Parish on Main Street in New City, with approximately 300 students in grades 1 - 4 at the time. The school is at 114 S. Main St., New City. Through the generosity and hard work of parishioners, the parish now has a beautiful new worship space, a 600-person church built in 2001. The new structure replaced the old, much smaller, converted Forester Hall, which served the Parish for many years, but required holding mass in both the church and auditorium multiple times. The new Church built on the site of the previous Church includes meeting hall and classrooms and a Eucharistic Chapel. The nave and sanctuary have beautiful stained glass windows including those of the American Saints with ties to New York. The Baptismal Font, with its fountain, is a special highlight. Statues and special sanctuary features are unique. The gathering space or atrium is remarkable for its huge stained glass windows depicting creation and St. Michael and St. Gabriel, two of the Archangels. The Plaza at the entrance includes a slightly larger than life-size statue of a young St. Augustine welcoming all as he contemplates "God is love." At Christmas time on Main Street you can see the almost life-size Nativity scene by the front lawn on Third and Main Streets. Today's St. Augustine Parish finds a healthy parish School recognized as outstanding by the Middle States accreditation organization. A vibrant Religious Education Program with almost 800 students, a comprehensive list of services and social organization, and more than 2,700 Parish families. St. Augustine's has a Parish Council which meets on the second Monday of each month, with attendance open to all members of the Parish. St. Augustine's also has an active CYO basketball program and scouting program. The parish offers Bingo (smoke-free) on Fridays at 7:45pm in the school auditorium.
