U.S. Coast Guard station at Eatons Neck is responsible for the center portion of Long Island Sound from the Port Jefferson line on the south side and the Bridgeport, Conn. line on the north to just east of the Queens border. It also provides assistance to local boaters. The station is an active military base and is home to military personnel. The station is also home to the Eatons Neck Lighthouse built in 1798 and is only accessible via private property and is generally not open to the public. The lighthouse was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1973. Since June 2008 this station has been commanded by CWO2 Robert Craighead. The station's equipment consists of two 41-foot utility boats and two 25-foot rescue boats. It also has a radio station, which is manned 24 hours a day, seven days per week. The unit mascot is a black mastiff golden retriever mix named Nate. Nate is named after DC3 Nathan Bruckenthal, son of Northport Village Police Chief Ric Bruckenthal, the first Coast Guard combat fatality since the Vietnam War who died in Iraq on April 24, 2004 at the Khawr Al Amay Oil Terminal off the coast of Iraq.
