Ulster County BOCES or Boards of Cooperative Educational Services, based in New Paltz, N.Y., is a public education collaborative that functions as an extension of local school districts. A BOCES provides services that school districts find too small to offer on their own or would be more economical to offer collaboratively and share costs with other districts. The function of a BOCES is to provide shared services to the component school districts in a manner that is effective and fosters equity for students. It helps school districts save money by pooling their resources and sharing costs. Its services are provided when two or more school districts have similar needs that can be met by sharing staff members, office space, equipment and time.
