The American Numismatic Society operates as a research museum promoting the study and appreciation of coins, medals and related objects of all cultures, historical and artistic backgrounds. It is a publicly supported organization that does collection and preservation of coins and medals, performs investigation and promotes and popularizes the science of numismatics. The museum maintains a numismatic collection of coins and medals and runs a library that supports scholarly research and publications. It also sponsors educational and interpretive programs for diverse audiences. The American Numismatic Society was incorporated in 1865 in New York City. The museum invites memberships from academicians, collectors and professional numismatists throughout the United States.
