Criteria for Volunteering:
Any man or woman residing within the confines of the Syosset Fire District, the Fire Protection Area of Laurel Hollow, or within reasonable distance to these areas, that is in reasonable shape, is at least 18 years old, and would like to make a difference in their community.
Some of the Requirements:
Must be at least 18 years old.
Must complete a minimum of 10 Drills / Practice Events per year.
Must pass department medical physical each year.
Must be present for a minimum of 5 meetings per year.
Juniors:
In 2000, the Syosset Volunteer Fire Department realized that its current membership needed a new way to attract and retain younger members that were willing, but unable – due to age, to participate in learning how to become a firefighter.
The Syosset Fire Department – Explorer Post 588 is comprised of roughly 15 active members. Minimum age requirement is 14 with the permission of parents or legal guardian. They meet on a regular basis and, participate in activities and training scenarios that provide the foundation for continuation towards an active firefighter status when they reach 18 years old.
Each member is issued equipment and a uniform from their own officer's and active Syosset Volunteer Fire Department 'advisors" at pre determined times. Members are encouraged to participate in training and are encouraged to help out around the fire house, fire scenes and other Department functions. Juniors "march" in official parades with the Department at functions throughout the year.
