Sealift was founded in 1975 as a ship brokerage house specializing in paper, rice, general cargo and operating break-bulk liner services to the Mediterranean and from Brazil. The company owns and operates a fleet of more than 10 United States flag ships, including one tanker, four container vessels, one roll-on/roll-off vessel, four break-bulk vessels and one heavy-lift vessel. The company is one of the largest ocean contractors for transporting U.S. food aid. Sealift carries agricultural food aid cargoes, military cargoes and Iraqi reconstruction cargoes. Sealift is a participating shipping company of the Military Sealift Command and provides the Pentagon with private cargo vessels to meet various contingency deployment requirements. Sealift handles all of the company s operations, chartering, engineering, crewing and accounting services from its headquarters in Oyster Bay, N.Y.
