The AFL chartered the Office and Professional Employees International Union in 1945. When it was established, the membership of the union numbered 22,000. The union includes approximately 145,000 members and is one of the larger unions in the AFL-CIO. The Office and Professional Employees International Union has local unions functioning throughout the 50 states, as well as Puerto Rico and Washington, D.C. The union also counts approximately 53 Canadian local unions, which are located throughout the provinces. The Office and Professional Employees International Union is located in Washington, D.C.
