Established in 1831, the New York Institute for Special Education is nonprofit and nonsectarian educational school providing various programs for children with visual, emotional and learning disorders. It offers a wide range of programs, such as summer camp and readiness programs. The Schermerhorn program is provided to children from 5 to 21 years of age who are suffering from mild secondary disabilities and put in specialized educational environment in order to be successful in school. Its Van Cleve program is designed for students with emotional and learning disorders, and also provides counseling services for students and their families. The Readiness program is for preschool children who are suffering from developmental disorders. It additionally offers career guidance services, and various rehabilitation programs that include occupational therapy, physical and speech therapies. It is accredited by the National Commission for the Accreditation of Special Education Services and is located in Bronx, N.Y.
