Founded in 1868, the New York Athletic Club can boast of a unique history. The club's founding premise was to bring structure to a sporting environment that was lacking in organization and uniformity of measurement. Quickly, the NYAC organized the first United States championships in boxing, wrestling and outdoor track and field. The New York City Club House stands in tribute to an unmatched athletic history and its ongoing commitment to the pursuit of sporting excellence. The history of the New York Athletic Club is a chronology of sporting accomplishment and innovation. Along the way, the club has attracted members who have excelled in every conceivable area of industry, commerce, science and the arts. The names of many NYAC members, past and present, are synonymous with excellence in their specialized fields. For this reason, the NYAC calls itself 'the world's greatest athletic club.'
