George Washington ordered the construction of this lighthouse in 1797 to guide ships sailing from Boston to New York City. Now, the lighthouse-turned-museum and park at the end of Lighthouse Rd. is frequented by locals and visitors seeking a glimpe into maritime history as well as a fantastic view of Long Island Sound atop a rocky bluff. Southold Park District maintains the park and Southold Historical Society runs the museum. The grounds can be used for picnics and small wedding ceremonies.
