Max Pitman, MD is a member of Summit Healths Gastroenterology team. Dr. Pitman is a board-certified gastroenterologist whose expertise covers the spectrum of digestive and liver diseases. In addition to general gastroenterology, he has a sub-specialized interest in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) such as Crohns disease and ulcerative colitis, as well as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), and the prevention of colon cancer and colon polyps through the use of screening and polypectomy. Dr. Pitman is trained and experienced in office-based infusion of biologic medicines (e.g. infliximab and vedolizumab) for the treatment of IBD, and he also serves as the Medical Director for Summit Healths endoscopy unit in Brooklyn. Believing strongly that dietary therapies are a critical tool in the management of many gastrointestinal conditions, Dr. Pitman stays knowledgeable and up to date on food intolerances, diet, and nutrition. Whether a routine visit or screening colonoscopy, he listens carefully to his patients to ensure accurate diagnosis and a successful treatment plan. For as long as I can remember, I have been in awe of the way doctors and other health care providers can make someone feel more comfortable at their most vulnerable times, says Dr. Pitman. While exciting and fascinating in its own right, the body of knowledge that we acquire as physicians was never as appealing to me as the ability to use that expertise to connect with - and support - people who may be feeling uncertain or afraid. He adds, I love getting to work with patients on their digestive health, not only because digestive symptoms are important to well-being, but also because the health of the gut can be a window into the rest of the body. When not working with his patients, Dr. Pitman loves to cook and can be found making waffles or pizzas for his kids, or cooking dinners for friends or family on the weekends. He also enjoys running, hiking, skiing, and anything that gets him into the outdoors.
