Founded in June 2007 in New York's gallery district Chelsea, Martos Gallery is the third enterprise of Jose Martos, who previously co-owned the Alona Kagan Gallery in Chelsea and the Martos Kagan Gallery in Soho. Known for organizing historically important exhibitions incorporating canonical figures such as Keith Haring, Andy Warhol, Lawrence Weiner, David Salle and many others, Jose Martos has built a sophisticated foundation of contemporary art for his most recent venture. An especially noteworthy group exhibition was STRANGE WEIGHT, curated by Rob Tufnell, who described the exhibition as "one of accelerated and condensed histories." The core focus of the gallery is the representation of an array of internationally renowned artists, both established and emerging, working with a plethora of media. Bill Albertini, Ben Berlow, Graham Caldwell, Jan Kopp, Martin Le Chevallier, Servane Mary, Curtis Mitchell, Baldvin Ringsted, Lyle Starr, Susanne Thiemann, Lincoln Tobier, and Caecilia Tripp have exhibited widely in museums, galleries and art fairs throughout the world. Each artist's work demonstrates the gallery's mission of exhibiting challenging contemporary art.
