What started in 1921 with a single volunteer patrolman, who was paid an annual salary of $1 and worked out of a tiny booth in the center of town, has grown into a police force of nearly two dozen full-time officers. The Malverne Police Department is the primary law enforcement agency for the village. All officers have completed the Nassau County Police Exam and many of them are residents of the community. The department boasts a great track record, helping Malverne to land a top spot in City-Data.com's 2006 ranking of U.S. cities with the lowest crime index per resident. The police headquarters opened in 1956 and is centrally located near village hall, the train station and the main street.
