LICKS enjoys prime real estate in the Hudson Harbor complex, adjacent to the train station and the waterfront park. Here proprietor and ice cream maker Joe Slakas and staff serve up gourmet freezer treats as well as espresso drinks, pastries, smoothies and more. Ingredients are locally sourced as much as possible, fresh and natural.
Slakas, who resides in Croton-on-Hudson and has a background in politics, made ice cream at home until he was encouraged to do it professionally. "People react better to this they do to politicians," he said. "They don't usually scream about ice cream." At least not in a bad way, that is. The ever-changing flavors include at the moment Heath Bar Crunch, pistachio, hazelnut, passion fruit and key lime sorbet.
Look for Slakas commuting via jet ski in the summer and for the golf cart he plans to rig with insulation for around-town ice cream service.
