The Ithaca Police Department is a law enforcement agency that maintains investigative and patrol divisions. It also operates traffic, communications and bicycle units. Established in 1888, the department responds to and investigates complaints of criminal activity, as well as issues assembly permits for groups to assemble within the city. In addition, the Ithaca Police Department issues vendor permits for the display of merchandise on sidewalks and properties other than city parks. It also operates Critical Incident Negotiation and Special Weapons and Tactical Teams. The department supports the Drug Abuse Resistance and Education program, which is a substance use prevention education program designed to equip elementary school children with skills for resisting peer pressure, tobacco, drugs and alcohol. The Ithaca Police Department is located in Ithaca, N.Y.
