Quietly secluded at the end of Old Jackson Avenue in a one-level ranch style building, stands Unitarian Society First of Westchester. This is a congregation where people of varying beliefs and lifestyles can converge as one group. Ample parking is available in the front of the building. For a detailed schedule of services and events, visit the Unitarian Society First of Westchester Web site.
FUSW provides nursery care for children from infancy through age three during Sunday services. Older children are invited to participate in a Religious Education program that follows the local school calendar. The Religious Education program is divided into five groups according to children's ages. Preschoolers through second graders participate in a class called Spirit Play which is informed by the Montessori educational philosophy. Grades three and four have their own class, called Moral Tales. Fifth and Sixth graders follow the Bibleodeon program, where they explore the Hebrew and Christian bible as one of many sources for spiritual practice and belief. Grades Seven and Eight are educated through a combination of Compass Points, a class encouraging the clarification of personal beliefs and values, and Our Whole Lives Sexuality Education, a comprehensive approach to human sexuality in an age-appropriate manner, based firmly on the values of respect, responsibility, justice and inclusiveness.
High Schoolers can join the Young Religious Unitarian Universalists, a youth group. The Young Religious Unitarian Universalists lead services for all members, attend youth conferences and also participate in community-building activities and social action projects.
In addition to the spiritual services it holds, FUSW participates in and/or sponsors twelve local action groups, including Common Ground Coffeehouse, Global Warming and Environmental Protection, Help Save Darfur and Midnight Run.
