Since 1888, New City Fire Engine Company No. 1 has served the fire safety needs of New City. The department's ranks are comprised entirely of volunteer firefighters. The New City firehouse, opposite Town Hall on Maple Avenue just off Main Street, houses the department's firematic apparatus: 9-2000, 9-Rescue, 9-1750, 9-Tower, 9-Tanker, 9-ATV, 9-SR, 9-Patrol, and two fireboats. Among the 26 volunteer fire departments in Rockland County, New City has the call designation as "Department 9." In 2013, New City is scheduled to host the county fire parade. Rockland County has an estimated 3,700 volunteer firefighters. New City is among the top five busiest fire departments in Rockland, answering more than 500 calls annually. In case of emergency, dial 911 for assistance. New City Fire Engine Company No. 1 conducts annual safety programs targeted to specific age groups. For example: In the "Firefighter is Your Friend" program, Kindergarteners and Pre-K students are introduced to firefighters in full gear (including air pack) to educate them on the need to seek out the firefighter instead of running from him/her. The children gain a confidence and awareness that will help them in a fire emergency. At the annual annual Community Fire Safety Day in New City in October, programs are geared to all ages and interest levels. Young children have games and are taught "Stop, Drop and Roll," while the more serious observers witness demonstrations of roof ventilation, tower rescue, extrication and the extinguishing of a live car fire. The department is always looking for new volunteers. Applicants must: Be a resident of the New City Fire District for 1 year, or a property owner and resident for 3 months preceding the date of application. And, be at least age 18.
