The Ecumenical Food Pantry is a White Plains institution that dates back to 1979. Every Thursday, food donations arrive at the Slater Center from a variety of sources, including religious organizations, individuals and businesses. With donations of money, the Pantry is also able to purchase groceries from wholesale suppliers and farmers markets. Volunteers organize and assemble packages of canned goods, meat, fresh vegetables, eggs, frozen foods and other commodities, which clients can pick up from the Pantry on Friday. Recipients of food packages from the Pantry must show proof of residency in White Plains. The Pantry currently serves more than 200 needy families each week and welcomes volunteers who would like to contribute their time. There is a special need for Spanish-speaking volunteers able to screen clients on Fridays. Clients and volunteers should come to Center entrance on Quarropas Street.
