History
Cumbe opened on January 2012 with the goal of creating a home for African and diaspora dance and music in Brooklyn - of bringing the varied, beautiful and rich range of dances from Africa, the Americas, and the Caribbean under one roof. Here, children and adults can immerse themselves in the joy and vitality of music and dance with some of the best teachers in New York City. You'll delve into the rhythms and movements of Senegal, Guinea, Brazil, Colombia, Cuba, Haiti, and more. We also host performances, talks, and throw amazing dance parties, usually with live music. Through dance and music, Cumbe aims to grow a community that celebrates exuberance, sensuality, power and laughter. Come join us and FEEL THE JOY! Cumbe moved from our original location (at 558 Fulton St.) in January 2015 and is now holding classes in multiple locations in Brooklyn and Manhattan. View our class schedule and locations on our website.
Specialties
MOVE. SING. DRUM. DANCE! Welcome to Cumbe, the new home for dance and drumming. Our classes are fun and energetic (a great way to beat the workout blahs) and we welcome all levels. Classes for adults range from traditional (W. African, Afro-Caribbean, etc.) to contemporary (Modern, Dancehall/Reggae and Hip Hop.). We also offer dance fitness classes and percussion workshops with world-class musicians. Children also love the high-energy world of dance with African roots. Classes for ages 1-5 introduce young ones to creative movement and rhythm through a combination of games, song, story-telling, drumming, and tumbling. We also host camps and birthday parties for all ages (contact us to plan a party you won't forget) and provide master artists for performances and teaching engagements.
