Cleary School for the Deaf was founded in 1925 and is located in Nesconset, N.Y. The school uses the total communication philosophy that consists of sign language, speech, speech reading, auditory training, mime, finger spelling and gestures. Its curriculum includes art, music, computers, dance, health and physical education. The school runs an infant program that is a school- and home-based program that serves children untill the age of three. It also offers self-study and auditory-oral preschool programs. The school has various facilities, including an assembly hall, gymnasium and dining hall. Its alumni include Clayton Valli, Ella Mae Lenz, Alan Barwiolek, J. Charlie McKinney and Mary Beth Miller. Cleary School for the Deaf is certified by the Middle States Association.
