History
The Brooklyn Navy Yard Development Corporation (BNYDC) is the private not-for-profit that manages the 300-acre Navy Yard as an industrial park under contract with the Yard's owner, the City of New York. BNYDC leases approximately 4.5 million square feet of space to more than 275 diverse tenants with over 5800 employees working in the Yard. BNYDC makes environmental sustainability, preservation and the celebration of the Navy Yard's rich history core components of its revitalization. On Veteran's Day 2011, BNYDC opened the Brooklyn Navy Yard Center at Building 92 as a gateway to the community. The design weds exhibition space in the renovated 1857 U.S. Marine Commandant's residence to a modern extension with space for job training partners, a classroom, cafe, and indoor/outdoor event space. Through tours, school and public programs, and free admission to the first permanent exhibition ever on the subject, BLDG 92 preserves the rich and complex history of the Brooklyn Navy Yard.
Specialties
BLDG 92, a new exhibition and visitors center, tells for the first time the story of the historic Brooklyn Navy Yard, the 300-acre site nestled on the world-famous Brooklyn waterfront that opened in 1801 as one of America's first naval shipyards. Building on its service as the nation's premiere naval industrial facility for 165 years, the Yard is now home to the greatest concentration of manufacturing and green businesses in New York City. BLDG 92 captures this extraordinary history in one of the most innovative exhibitions anywhere in America. Cutting-edge interactive media offers access to oral histories of, among others, some of the nation's first Rosie the Riveters, and never-before-seen artifacts, photographs, audio and video footage and ship models. The 8,000 square foot exhibit, open to the public, explores our national history through the lens of where many important moments happened--at the Brooklyn Navy Yard.
