Blackwell Island Lighthouse, now known as Roosevelt Island Lighthouse, is a historic stone lighthouse located at the northern tip of Roosevelt Island in the East River. Built in 1872 by the government of New York City, it was designated a New York City Landmark and added to the National Register of Historic Places in the 1970s.
Designed by architect James Renwick Jr. in a Gothic Revival style, the lighthouse stands at approximately 50 feet tall and features an octagonal base and shaft constructed of gray gneiss quarried on the island. After a partial restoration in the 1970s and a more recent project in 2021, the lighthouse continues to be a significant landmark with a rich history dating back to the 19th century.
