Founded in 1956, the Association for the Advancement of the Blind and Retarded (AABR) is a nonprofit agency. It offers a variety of individualized programs and services for people with development disabilities and autism and their families. The agency provides recreation, adult day treatment and thrift shop programs. The Association for the Advancement of the Blind and Retarded also offers family and residential services. It operates the New York Child Learning Institute, which is a school for preschool and school-age children suffering with autism. The agency s Day Treatment Centers serves more than 300 adults suffering with severe and profound retardation, including visual and hearing impairment, cerebral palsy and other physical disabilities.
