Founded in 1975, The Challenge Newspaper Group publishes three newspapers targeted to the African-American population of Brooklyn. Thomas H. Watkins, Jr. is the publisher.
The Challenge Group started with the Daily Challenge Newspaper, a publication that has an activist bend, and the city's only black daily newspaper. The company then purchased The New York Recorder, which eventually became The Afro Times, a family-oriented general news publication. In 1993, the company launched its third publication, The New American Newspaper, which covers national and local entertainment news.
