Abraham House was founded in 1993 by three Rikers Island chaplains, who have more than 60-years experience at the Department of Corrections. The inmates are required to finish their high school education, and are counseled for their problems, learn to take social and personal responsibilities, get a job. The organization provides a full-range of assistance and services to a person who has been incarcerated and to the families of inmates, particularly their young children. Abraham House operates three primary programs, including an Alternative to Incarceration Program, a family and pastoral center, and a year-round after school program. Its overhead and program expenses are underwritten by private grants and donations, and by the residents themselves who contribute a portion of wages earned while in residence. Abraham House is located in Bronx, N.Y.
