Established in 1919, the New Mexico Department of Health operates various programs for health improvement, primary and emergency medical care, and sexual assault and AIDS victims support. It also offers substance abuse prevention, forensic evaluation, alcohol cessation, mental health disorder and illness treatment programs for individuals with developmental disabilities. The department maintains more than five divisions that protect citizens and communities by preparing for health emergencies. The New Mexico Department of Health operates a public health division that prevents disabilities, diseases and premature deaths through over 50 public health offices, contractors and community partnerships. The department s epidemiology and response division tracks infectious diseases and health statistics, trains organizations in disease control, responds to public health emergencies and offers vital records services. It works in partnership with the New Mexico Human Services Department.
