Since 1956, when the Youth Orchestras of Essex County was founded through sponsorship by the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra and the West Orange Public Schools, the organization has helped hone the musical skills of students in grades 3 through 12. The four groups — the Essex County Symphony Orchestra, the Junior Symphony, Overture Strings and Chamber Ensembles — take part in two annual concerts. In addition, it makes a spring concert tour every year. The orchestra practices and has concerts at South Orange Middle School, whose address is listed here. The group emphasizes discipline and professionalism, a valuable skill for musically inclined youth.
