M.A.S.T. is one of the five academies run by the Monmouth County Vocational School District. Started in 30 years ago as a part-time program, it is now a full-time, degree-granting one. It is a four-year high school, which attracts students from all over the state. Students typically apply during their eighth-grade year. Located at the tip of Sandy Hook in the Fort Hancock Historic Area, the school's curriculum focuses on marine science, technology and engineering. In lieu of physical education, all students are required to participate in the Naval Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (NJROTC). All students are enrolled in college preparatory work for all four years, too. While many of the courses are similar to those taught at traditional high schools, M.A.S.T. students also participate in expanded laboratory science and other science courses, which emphasize marine technology and concepts.
