New Jersey Orators, Inc. (NJO) is a non-profit youth organization founded in 1985 with a mission to teach children aged 7 to 18 the art of public speaking, reading, media arts, literature, civic engagement, and life skills in preparation for college and future careers. NJO was established by a group of African-American executives who recognized the need to address the learning achievement gap within their community, starting with 16 students in Somerset and growing to over 200 students statewide.
Through public speaking workshops, literacy workshops, civic engagement and college readiness workshops, and an oral history interviewing program, NJO aims to equip students, particularly those from low-income and minority backgrounds, with the language skills and knowledge necessary to succeed in college and beyond. By focusing on improving reading and math skills, NJO strives to bridge the gap in standardized test scores and empower students to make informed decisions and contribute to their communities. With the support of sponsors, NJO continues to make a positive impact on the lives of young individuals in Bridgewater, NJ.
