Established in 1764, the New Brunswick Fire Department operates under the government of the city of New Brunswick, N.J., which also operates public works, finance, social services, economic development and administration departments. The New Brunswick Fire Department is a public safety agency and maintains a communication center that coordinates responses to fire, police and medical emergencies. The department employs a staff, including firefighters, volunteers and lieutenants. It operates a fire prevention bureau that conducts inspections of businesses, as well as educational facilities. The New Brunswick Fire Department operates a dispatch center. In addition, the department offers heavy rescue and vehicle extrication services.
