Founded in 1990, COVANTA Essex Company is one of the leading waste-to-energy facilities in New Jersey that serves the refuse disposal needs of more than 20 municipalities in Essex County, N.J. The facility combusts over 2,800 tons per day of municipal solid waste and generates nearly 65 megawatts of electricity for sale. It is owned and operated by Covanta Energy Corporation, which deals with energy-from-waste and power generation projects. Covanta Energy Corporation is a subsidiary of Covanta Holding Corporation, which deals with energy-from-waste and renewable energy projects. Its facilities convert over 16 million tons of waste into nearly 8 million megawatt hours of clean renewable electricity and create more than 10 billion pounds of steam that are sold to a variety of industries.
