Volunteer Center of Bergen County, based in Hackensack, N.J., was founded in 1966 by the Junior League of Bergen County and a group of concerned community representatives. It works with more than 500 private and public nonprofit agencies in and around Bergen County and maintains a database with various volunteer opportunities for individuals and groups. The center coordinates a number of services, specifically for nonprofit agencies of various types, including small grassroot organizations, municipal and government entities and local chapters of national nonprofits and international organizations. Its services include recruitment and referral of volunteers, including board members and professional development for volunteer directors through the Volunteer Management Institute, customized training for professional staff and volunteers and consultation on nonprofit management.
