Initially built as an elementary school, Auten Road Intermediate School houses Hillsborough Township's fifth and sixth grade students.
Population growth in the 2000s forced the district to convert the school from elementary to intermediate students. Prior to the conversion, district elementary schools housed students in grades kindergarten through five, while grades six, seven and eight attended Hillsborough Middle School.
Students are divided into 11 fifth-grade teams and six sixth-grade teams, and receive the majority of their lessons from the team teachers. Two teachers lead the fifth grade teams, while three or four teachers lead the sixth grade teams.
In addition to reading, math, social studies, writing and science, the students take physical education every day. Sixth grade students have art, music, German and Spanish for one marking period each year, while fifth grades rotate between music, art, Italian, French and computers.
Principal Christopher Carey leads the school, which has the Mini-Raider has its mascot.
