Atlantic Container Line is a leading carrier of containers, oversized cargoes and vehicles between North America and Europe. The company was established in 1965 when a consortium of five major European steamship companies joined together to meet the high capital investment involved in building and operating a fleet of roll-on/roll-off containerships. With the introduction of one of the first computerized intermodal transport systems Route Code, it began to offer shippers door-to-door services that continuously update through-transport tariffs for repeat shipments. In 1971, ACL introduced its simplified alternative to the bill of lading, Datafreight Receipt, one of the first electronically transmitted documentation systems. In the mid-1970s, it helped pioneer SPEED and COMPASS, some of the first real-time computer systems in the transportation industry. Atlantic Container Line is headquartered in Iselin, N.J.
