History
Our charitable roots began 125 years ago in 1875 with a small group of 24 Manchester area women who created The Women's Aid and Relief Society. It affected positive change in hundreds of lives. Their work evolved, from opening the area's first hospital, to creating Pearl Manor. In order to provide multiple levels of care, in 1995 Pearl Manor moved from its original location to join Hillcrest Terrace on its new campus. In 2009, that entity became Manchester's first Continuing Care Retirement Community (CCRC) and changed its name to Birch Hill Terrace, then to Birch Hill. Birch Hill affiliated with the RiverWoods Group in 2016 and in 2021 officially changed names to RiverWoods Manchester. The legacy of our work continues to evolve and grow to this day with the strength of the RiverWoods Group. We are the largest, independent, not-for-profit family of Continuing Care Retirement Communities in Nothern New England.
