Established in 1917, the Nevada Department of Transportation is responsible for the planning, construction, operation and maintenance of the more than 5,000 miles of highways and over 1,000 bridges. It operates a communication center that offers real-time traffic and travel information. The department compiles data and produces a variety of reports for public information, such as environmental services procedure guides, geotechnical reports, program development manuals, research division publications and commercial vehicle handbooks. The Nevada Department of Transportation supports an adopt-a-highway program for litter removal on state highways for individuals and community service groups. It offers information regarding federal and intrastate regulations, licensing and acquisitions. The department is headquartered in Carson City, Nev., and maintains an office in Winnemucca, Nev.
