History
In 1991, the City of Reno decided that it could no longer run the Junior Ski Program at Sky Tavern. It was at this point that a group of dedicated parents formed the current non-profit 501(c)(3) organization that manages programming, maintains it throughout the year, and leases the area from the city with the understanding that it will continue and expand its enrichment opportunities for local youth.
Specialties
Starting in 1948, Sky Tavern's volunteer-based Junior Ski Program has taught over 100,000 kids to ski and snowboard. More recently, Sky Tavern has become a year-round destination by also offering mountain biking, adventure camps, and family-friendly events like the summer music series. While Sky kids develop skills in snow sports and a passion for outdoor recreation, they also learn important life lessons in respect, responsibility, and trust. Similarly, adults enjoy continued growth as mentors and parents while fulfilling their vital role as program volunteers.
