History
The front nine of the Stead Golf Course was built in 1960 by the U.S. Air Force for the use of military personal assigned to the Stead Air Force Base. With the phasing out of Stead Air Force Base in the middle 1960s Washoe County assumed operation and maintenance of the course, Washoe County purchased the course in 1966 and renamed it Sierra Sage. At an approximate cost of $225,000 the back nine was added to the course in 1970. In 2009. Mike and Denise Mazzaferri agreed to manage the course for Washoe County which was contemplating closure. The Sage is now one of the top value golf course in the area with excellent conditions -- using recycled water -- and one of the region's largest men's and women's golf clubs. The Sage's practice facilities host the University of Nevada Men's and Women's golf teams. The Sage hosted the 2015 USGA Amateur Championship Qualifier and the 2013 NAIA Nevada High School Boys Championships.
