The State of Nevada, also known as the Battle-Born State, Sagebrush State and Silver State, is located in the southwestern region of the United States and occupies an area of 110,540 square-miles. The state is home to approximately 2 million citizens and is governed by separate legislative, executive and judicial branches. Supreme executive power resides with the governor, supreme judicial power with Nevada s supreme, appellate, superior, municipal and district courts and legislative power with an elected Senate and Assembly. Nevada s name, from the Spanish word meaning snow-capped, was officially adopted in 1861 when Congress established the territory. Attractions drawing tourists and available to residents include resort areas, sunbathing, Ghost towns, rodeos, trout fishing, water skiing and deer hunting. The State of Nevada was officially admitted to the U.S. in 1864.
