Nebraska, the Cornhusker state, is located in north-central United States. The origin of its name comes from the Oto Indian word Nebrathka, which means flat water. The climate in Nebraska changes frequently. The state experiences extremely cold winter weather and hot and humid summers with tornadoes, hailstorms and blizzards. Nebraska is the only state with a unicameral and nonpartisan legislature. The legislature is made up of 49 state senators that are elected from 49 districts. Senators are elected with no party affiliation. The chief executive is the governor. Nebraska s economy revolves around its agriculture industry. In 2003, more than 96 percent of the state s land was farm and ranch land. The state has numerous attractions including the Henry Doorly Zoo and several state parks. Nebraska has a population of more than 1.7 million. It became the 38th state in 1867.
