Paws Up is located in the heart of the picturesque Blackfoot Valley, 30 miles northeast of Missoula, Mont., near the town of Greenough, Mont. The ranch's beginning dates back to the homesteader days of the late 1800s. The land's history goes back even farther to when the Blackfoot River served as a transportation corridor for Nez Perce, Flathead and Blackfeet Indians. Later, it was the route for fur trappers, miners and loggers. The Indians called the river 'Cokalahishkit,' which means 'the river of the road to the buffalo.' The ranch's history grew and ownership changed hands several times. In 2003, after five years in the registered cattle business, Paws Up was rated among the top 10 Black Angus seedstock operations in Montana. After the annual production sale that year, the decision was made to focus on new enterprises, including running a commercial cattle operation and opening a first-class resort. The resort has horseback riding, fly fishing and plenty of scenery.
