Big Springs Trout Hatchery is the largest coldwater production facility in Montana, located 7 miles southeast of Lewistown. Established in 1922 with the help of the City of Lewistown and the local Rod Gun Club, the hatchery has expanded over the years to include rock-walled ponds, bridges, and raceways. Today, it produces 160,000 pounds of fish annually, including Rainbow Trout, Brown Trout, Kokanee Salmon, and Chinook Salmon, which are stocked in various waters throughout Montana.
With a focus on conservation and preventing contamination, the hatchery has implemented measures such as an enclosed water supply system and sourcing eggs from other hatcheries. Visitors can explore the Upper Unit, which houses an egg incubation room and indoor raceways, or the Lower Unit, which features 30 outside raceways. Big Springs Trout Hatchery offers a unique opportunity to witness the process of fish production and contribute to the preservation of Montana's aquatic ecosystems.
