The Southwest Center for Independent Living is a private, nonprofit agency that provides resources and services to people with disabilities. Established in 1985, it serves the counties of Christian, Dallas, Greene, Lawrence, Polk, Stone, Taney, and Webster in Missouri. The organization s staff responds to over 2,000 requests a year for information on disability-related issues. The Southwest Center for Independent Living offers the Renovation and Modifications Program, which builds wheelchair ramps, widens bathroom doorways, installs grab bars and provides smoke detectors with strobe lights for those with hearing impairments. The organization publishes a bi-monthly newsletter that has a circulation of over 2,500. In addition, it operates a resource library that stocks books, articles, videotapes and cassette tapes. The Southwest Center for Independent Living is located in Springfield, Mo.
