Built in 1911, Chillicothe Municipal Utilities, also known as CMU, is a community-owned corporation that provides electricity, water, wastewater removal, refuse collection and Internet services for the residents of Chillicothe in Missouri. The corporation operates an electric department that supplies electric services and serves more than 4,700 customers with over five substations and nearly 115 miles of line. Its water department provides more than 5 million gallons of water daily and serves over 4,000 customers. The department additionally has nearly 90 miles of waterlines. Chillicothe Municipal Utilities wastewater treatment plant has more than 70 miles of sewer line and processes over 1 million gallons daily. The corporation works in partnership with Hope Haven Industries, which is a sheltered workshop and recycler. It is governed by a Board of Public Works, which is a nonpartisan group appointed by the mayor.
