Heartland Independent Living Center, located in Owensville, MO, is a state-funded Center for Independent Living that has been serving individuals with disabilities in Franklin, Gasconade, and Maries counties since 2002. Originally established as a branch of Disabled Citizens Alliance for Independence, Heartland became a stand-alone center in 2006 and has since expanded its programs, services, and staff to meet the independent living needs of the community.
In 2010, Heartland opened the Christopher Manhart Office in Union, dedicated to the memory of Chris Manhart and his family, who played a significant role in the center's development. Although the Manhart Office closed in 2016 due to renovations in the main office, Heartland continues to provide essential services, including consumer-directed services, in-home care programs, assistive equipment, dental assistance, and disability awareness education, among others.
