Founded in 1967, the Southern Mississippi Planning and Development District, also known as SMPDD, is one of the leading regional planning entities in the United States. The district manages operations in Jones, Lamar, Marion, Perry, Stone and Wayne counties in Mississippi. It operates manages a business development department that administers financing programs. The Southern Mississippi Planning and Development District also collects, updates and creates a variety of geographic data sets. The district administers a workforce development program that features access to job training and education services. In addition, it manages Area Agency on Aging, which serves as the public advocate for the development and implementation of home- and community-based care systems for senior citizens.
