As a facility of the Mississippi Department of Mental Health, Mississippi State Hospital works for the improvement of health status for individuals who are in need of psychiatric, chemical dependency or nursing home services. It provides psychiatric evaluation, medical care and rehabilitative services. Accredited by The Joint Commission, it is one of the largest hospitals in Mississippi and the one of the largest public psychiatric facilities in the United States. Founded in 1855, Mississippi State Hospital operates several crisis intervention centers that provide short-term treatment for adults who require acute mental health care services. It also maintains a speaker s bureau where its employees speak on topics suited to its audience. The bureau serves over 1,200 patients, residents and consumers per day and employs nearly 2,200 individuals. Mississippi State Hospital is located in Whitfield, Miss.
